Over the moon about this craft and treat!

Hey everyone!  Today we wrapped up our Outer Space Week with some fun moon activities that the kids really loved.

First up we did a really fun, simple craft that kids enjoyed.  To get started we whipped up some home-made glow-in-the-dark puffy paint!  All you need to make your own is:

 

1/2 C of glue

1 1/2 C shaving cream

1 T glow in the dark paint

My kids loved dumping everything in the bowl and stirring it all together.  They thought it was SO funny that the paint smelled like their daddy :)

Once the puffy paint was ready to go, I got big pieces of craft paper and let the kids go to town!

They just covered their paper in the puffy paint, and then after they dried for a few hours we cut them into moon-shapes.

 I LOVE how these moons turned out!  When the puffy paint dried it had a really cool texture that simulated the craters and peaks of the moon perfectly.  The COOLEST part though was when we took all our moons into the bathroom and closed the door.  Anything glow-in-the-dark is a big hit at our house!  I would really recommend this craft...it was SO easy, cheap and the kids loved it!

Because Friday is Baking Day at our house we wanted to make a fun treat to go with our craft.  I have to warn you...we attempted a moon cake...my husband says it looks like a soccer ball :)  Even so...my kids did it mostly themselves and they loved their moon/soccer ball cake so that is really all that matters.

To make your own you just need to make a cake mix and pour it in a glass bowl.  Cook it for 4o minutes at 350 degrees and then let cool.  

While it is cooling give your kids baggies with Oreo cookies in them and let them go crazy smashing them to their little hearts content :)

Once they are all done, add the crumbs to a container of cream cheese frosting and frost your cake.  Then take a few chocolate cookies and use them to make craters...and you have your very own Crater Cake!

We got the idea from Family Fun magazine...I think theirs turned out a little bit better ;)

Field Trip Thursday...at the Clark Planetarium!

 Today was Field Trip Thursday and we ventured out to our local Clark Planetarium!

Since we were focusing on the Sun today, I made sure to pack a snack I thought my kids would enjoy ;)

Once we got there, the kids were totally enthralled with every single exhibit.  Britton ran right over to the astronaut exhibit and pressed his little nose right up against the glass :)

Far and away, the kids favorite thing was the cloud simulator.  They learned all about water vapor and how clouds are formed.  They kept yelling, "Look mom!!  I'm holding a cloud!!" :)

We really focused on learning about the sun at the Planetarium, and they had a really fun exhibit that talked about solar energy versus other types of energy.  The kids had to spin these wheels until they could get one of the lights to light up...totally loved it!

What kid doesn't love the big "Lightening Ball"?  

Yeah...I have no idea what that is really called but Skylar's name for it works great for me :)

I loved seeing my kids imaginations in full force as the walked across the moon...

and jumped around the red planet.

One of the best part of visiting the Clark Planetarium?  It's FREE!  There is a charge for any of the movies they show, but even without seeing a movie the kids and I spent over an hour at all the different hands-on exhibits that were offered.  

We had such a good time at the Clark Planetarium, I LOVE when we can spend the week learning about something and then let the kids experience it as hands-on as possible.

Build-your-own Constellations...the tasty way!

Hello, hello!  

Today we kicked off our week of learning all about Outer Space!  My kids love this theme and we always have a lot of fun learning new things.  Today we are talking about stars, and specifically constellations.

First up we talked a little bit about what constellations are.  I was very impressed Kendall knew right away...I'll have to thank her preschool teacher for that! ;)  Once we talked about it the kids wanted to make their own.  I gave them some black foam, glow in the dark paint, and star stamps.  They went to town stamping stars all over their foam, and when it was all dry they drew lines connecting each star together.  It was really fun to see them use their imaginations to tell me what they thought their constellations were :)  The BEST part though was all going into our bathroom, turning off the lights, closing the door, and seeing all the constellations glow in the dark...my kids thought that was THE coolest!

 

After we did our simple craft (really...it took less than 10 minutes) I asked the kids if they wanted to make some more constellations...ones that they could eat!!

I bet you could guess their answer ;)

All you need to make your own Starry Constellation Snacks are some pretzel sticks and star-shaped Jello Jigglers.

I divided up the jello and pretzels and let the kids go to town!

They really loved doing this...I think they always feel a little wild when I let them "play" with their food :)

Skylar was so proud of her rainbow constellation and Kendall was beaming about her house.  Britton had no idea what his was...but he sure thought it was yummy!

Yeah...she was pretty excited about the Jello :)

After we had made a bunch of different constellations the kids finally got to their favorite part...eating them all up! :)
